Chapter 16

Reese Davies stood tall and accepted the standing ovation exactly for what it was—his due.

They’d said it couldn’t be done. They’d said that junior senators needed to mind their place and pay their dues. Reese had ignored that so-called conventional wisdom and proved all those old pols wrong. He’d never had a doubt, of course, that he’d succeed. He had been born for greatness.

He’d always known it.

Davies wore his polish as well as any sophisticate. His Ralph Lauren suit, his shoes—everything on his body was American designed, and American made. He was, by damn, a patriot, on his way to the very top.

He kept his smile in place as he raised his hand to his audience, his own trademark salute, and then stepped off the stage and into the wings.

Davies had very few friends, but then he’d never particularly wanted any. Friends were a drain and a distraction from the end game. He trusted only one man fully, and that man was his father.

He loved his father almost as much as he loved himself.

Davies was a man who knew where he was going and every moment of every day was designed to take him one step closer to that sacred goal.

He made his way through the backstage area, toward the exit. He only tarried long enough to let those waiting—those whose proper role was to serve their betters—to have a tiny little taste of his greatness. He saw it in their eyes, in the way they took a step back, and in their body language.

They didn’t have any real understanding, because they were only workers. But clearly they had a reverence for him—likely gifted to them from above. They showed admiration and an acknowledgment that they were in the presence of someone special.

This was true grace, and it was a grace he’d been granted all his life.

He kept a brisk pace, never slowing, never once doubting doors would be opened for him as he walked. Once inside the confines of his limousine, he checked the time and found that his progress was, as always, perfectly timed.

He pressed the button that would allow him to communicate with his driver. “Take the scenic route.”

A metallic-like voice answered. “Yes, sir, Senator.”

Davies sat back, relaxed, and poured himself a glass of scotch. His driver would take a longer, circuitous drive back to his home.

Sometimes he traveled with his aide, but not this time. Not when he was expecting a call from one of his wealthiest and most important backers. Davies kept certain relationships to himself. He understood at a deep level that potential traps abounded for someone of his stature. The best a man in his position could do was practice absolute discretion. If he did, then he knew his reward would always be success. That had been his father’s golden rule—as in, if he kept that rule, the gold would always come his way.

There’d been many times along this path he’d been set upon, when he’d done what needed doing no matter what that had been—and found only reward for his actions, whatever they might have been.
